Government dialling back number of temporary residents by 43%

Three Key Points
The federal government is significantly reducing the number of new temporary residents (including international students and temporary workers). For example, the target for new temporary resident admissions is dropping from roughly 673,000 in 2025 to about 385,000 in 2026, and then approximately 370,000 in 2027 and 2028.
At the same time, the number of new permanent residents admitted annually is being stabilised at a lower level: about 380,000 per year for 2026-2028 (down from previous higher targets).
The rationale given is that rapid population growth from temporary residents has placed strain on housing supply, infrastructure (schools, health care) and affordability — and the government says the cuts are needed to “match immigration levels with our needs and our capacity to welcome them”.
